No limit on stupid
I am not suggesting that you can't coach effectively without challenging a player's "manhood," but I wonder how abrasive Wojick really has been. One of my high school football coachs frequently called players, including myself, a "girl" and a "turd" if you got steamrolled by someone. We had another who liked to break clipboards over our helmets. It was all supposed to make you tough. Things have really changed.mccabemi wrote:This doesn't deserve it's own thread so I thought I'd put it here

Having said all this, I would agree that for $400K per season you should be able to get a coach who can challenge and motivate players without getting stupid about it.
(Note: When my wife struggles to help me with farm chores I like to quote my old coach and say, "You fromp, you turd, you girl!" It always makes me laugh.)
Recent history, and even not so recent - Bob Valvano fired in 1992 for abusive conduct as head bb coach at Catholic University in Washington, DC (same year his team set school record for number of wins) - strongly suggests that it is the more prudent course to leave the manhood challenging to the US Marines.
Sure screaming vitriolic insults at players in the locker room at half time and during a game may well build short term player intensity, so as to stop the harassment. It is utterly corrosive, however, in undermining the longer term respect and admiration that bonds player/coach/team/school and community for a lifetime of mutual support.
Handing out tampons to his players at CU so as to shame them into "manning up" on defense definitely meets any objective criterion for stupidity.

There is no good way out of the situation at CofC. If CDW stays he is a lame duck who has lost the team. If they fire him, they will further degrade the already degraded position of head mens' basketball coach at CofC. They will most likely also lose the good recruiting class that he has signed for the upcoming season.

Wait now; I can assure you that both contemporary and historical accounts have reported this allegation to be both factual and undenied by the principles involved as to the distribution of female hygiene articles to CU players. To have made up such an untoward accusation out of whole cloth would have seriously unprincipled.

This guy is a USNA grad, makes millions of dollars a year, has previous head coaching experience yet remains clueless. Meanwhile in Afghanistan, some 21 year old "kid" making less than 30K and leading a squad knows more about leadership than this insecure , immature "man" could ever fathom. He needs to be fired, he is an embarrassment.
