57 years ago today, my family and I made it to the Charlotte Coliseum for a Friday night contest vs the Gobblers of VPI. The Cats lost, but I was hooked as a fan for life. The things I remember most, cigarette smoke filling the arener and the band playing Dixie over and over like it was the Davidson fight song. My favorite player back in the day was Wayne Huckel.

Might have been two or three years after (you would know) I saw Davidson play at West Virginia. The best shooter I ever saw until 2006 played for WVU and had led my high school to a state championship in ‘68. Went down to see WVU play against some random team (I probably thought it was Dickinson). That random team destroyed WVU. I am guessing it was ‘69-70 as there was no freshman eligibility.

I was privileged to see Davidson beat WVU in Orlando. As an undergraduate, I saw them keep us out of the NCAA tournament.

Those scoring averages are all the more remarkable when you realize there was no shot clock and no 3-point line.
