North Carolina Teams - RPI

Post by Corpulent Cat » Sun Apr 07, 2024 4:21 pm

#4 - North Carolina
#9 - East Carolina
#16 - Wake Forest
#17 - Duke
#36 - NC State
#62 - Campbell
#64 - UNCG
#80 - App St
#84 - UNC Wilmington
#106 - Charlotte
7 other teams
#242 - Davidson

Now, we beat A&T and Queens and split with A&T, but our 9 Quad4 losses and miserable OOC schedule have really hurt us.

Are you suggesting that instead of travelling to Cookeville, TN to play Tenn Tech, we go to Greenville, NC and play ECU and deposit a check?

We can't go to Greenville, SC and play Furman anymore. Maybe we can, but it would be embarrassing if didn't sweep.

DFL in a good baseball state.

We also split with Charlotte. The loss, though, was by the score of 24-1.

There are 295 D1 baseball programs. We are #267 in walks allowed per 9 innings (6.61), #254 in WHIP (1.93), and #254 in ERA (7.94). In 28 games we have hit 36 batters, tying us for #153. At one time, our ERA was >10.00, so there is that.

Yay! We leapfrogged Queens! We are now #241 (17th of 18 in NC) and 11th of 12 in the A-10.

We need this win vs Winthrop. You need to beat your local opponents.

We're DFL in N.C. again. 240. Next crappiest is Gardner Webb at 231, then Queens at 229, and UNCA at 221. They all have worse records than we do, but comfortably better strength of schedule. Not tricky to have SOS better than 210. The Athletic Director has a challenging time ahead. Does he find a way to fund baseball enough that we can retain assistant coaches? Does he switch head coaches? Does he signal that DFL is good enough? My guess is that nothing changes and that dozens of fans will continue coming to games. My other guess is that a few of our better players will get portal poached by better programs.

We have 3 players who are hitting .300 against the 210th best schedule in the NCAA. 2 of the 3 are Juniors. Are better teams going to poach them?

If so, we can finish last without them next year and use their scholarship money to find younger players who may end up being better.

We can look at the portal and contact guys who aren't playing enough at UNC, Wake, and Virginia.

I'd poach Cooper Cavanaugh, Shaggy, Putnam, and Howard. Could Weber, Whelan, Perkins, and Ban produce on a better team with an experienced pitching coach? Our future isn't bright, but individual Wildcats could have bright futures elsewhere.

Fix and Champey both have good arms and might be worth poaching by a school with a top-notch pitching coach.

Davidson might have a top-notch pitching coach. We don't know. We can't keep anyone in that job. It's hard to argue that our guys have improved as the season has gone on.

Parker Bangs was at Davidson for 4 years, and our 2022 staff finished eighth nationally with an ERA of 3.86. He is now in his 3rd season at Rice, and the Owls' ERA (5.05) is one run better than it was before he arrived. I don't know what it would have taken to keep him, but we should have done it. I wonder if we could get Durin O'Linger away from the Dodgers. $75,000 a year might do it.

We've jumped over Queens in the RPI. Still stunned that we rate so low in NC - probably the best college baseball state in America.

We should be doing better.
