Welcome Zach Laput!

D2 All American. Great addition!
“Everywhere I’ve went I’ve won championships, dominated and been player of the year from high school to college,” Laput said.
“The results and the work will always speak louder than opinions and the schools that don’t offer will lose out on someone that is willing to do more than anyone else in their locker room could even think of to win. I am blessed to be in this position now and don’t take a second of it for granted. I give my best to getting better every second and am made for this.”

Laput looks like an excellent player. I’m sure he’s a nice, smart guy. I don’t have a problem taking someone from a D2 school (and Bentley is USNWR’s #1 “regional university” in the North).
But I’m pretty uncomfortable with having players who (1) will be at Davidson for only one year maximum, or (2) are not degree-seeking student athletes. He’s both (unless I’m misreading something).

Laput’s a great addition to a team in need of a floor leader, scorer, high basketball IQ.Acorn wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2024 6:50 amLaput looks like an excellent player. I’m sure he’s a nice, smart guy. Re: Welcome Zach Laput!
Since Laput missed playing his freshman year because of Covid and has only played 3 years doesn’t that mean that he has 2 years of eligibility left? His regular fourth year and his Covid year. Isn’t he possibly in the same position as Loyer was with two years of eligibility? Maybe he plans to stay two years and get a degree from Davidson.
Someone who understands this better please correct me if I’m wrong.

Everything I’ve read says one year. His own announcement says he’s excited to play his “final year” at Davidson.Classof70 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 16, 2024 7:26 amSince Laput missed playing his freshman year because of Covid and has only played 3 years doesn’t that mean that he has 2 years of eligibility left? Re: Welcome Zach Laput!
My understanding is that you get 4 years of eligibility, but 20-21 doesn’t count. So he gets to play 22, 23, 24, and next season, 25.
Re: Welcome Zach Laput!
One thing to remember about "D2" athletes is that with the 5th years of eligibility for D1 athletes, a bunch of kids who would have gone to a D1 school, wound up in D2.
For some of these kids, they got to play right away in D2 rather than sitting on the bench in D1.
I hope that Zach Laput enjoys his year at Davidson and gets something out of both the academics and athletics.
Go Cats!

Re: Welcome Zach Laput!
If we are going to be competitive in the A10 we might have to get comfortable with some things we might not have been so comfortable with before. Not that I'm uncomfortable with this, even if plays only one year. We need help. Think of him as visiting international student who happens to play basketball (and is not international).
Different world. I don't like it, but it's where we are. I'm confident we will remain among the handful of schools with rigorous standards for athletes.
